Researchers describe secrets of ‘magic’ antidepressant
Yale researchers have discovered how a novel anti-depressant can take effect in hours, rather than the weeks or months usually required for most drugs currently on the market. The findings, described in the August 20 issue of the journal Science, should speed development of a safe and easy-to-administer form of the anti-depressant ketamine, which has already proven remarkably effective in …

Arthritis Myth Buster: 5 Secrets to Eliminating Arthritis Pain Revealed
46 million people suffer from arthritis, yet few know of the ways to control arthritis pain. Learn the myths behind the disease and your options to a pain free life.
Myth Buster #1: There is just one type of Arthritis
There are over 100 types of arthritis including Osteoarthritis, Gout and Fibromyalgia There are many forms of arthritis resulting in joint stiffness, joint inflammation and pain: making getting out of bed in the morning agonizing, rising from your chair torture, or even a once easy task of getting in and out of your car a monumental achievement. I remember a 62 year old patient who had such painful joints in her knees; the strain of getting up compelled her to sit in her chair all day. What she didn’t realize was that sitting all day was actually making her arthritis condition worse and by the time she sought treatment she was in a wheelchair and no longer able to walk.
Myth Buster # 2: The Only Treatment For Arthritis Pain is Pills or Surgery.
In order to make an informed decision, you need to be armed with the latest in arthritis treatment choices. Sometimes surgery is necessary, but since surgery is a major event not to be taken lightly, other forms of treatment should be explored first. Medicines are sometimes a necessary evil. Evil because over time they can cause liver toxicity and can also increase your susceptibility to life threatening infections. However, on the other hand, they are necessary at times because they help alleviate pain. But what if there was something else that could alleviate your pain, required no co-payment, enabled you to live a full active life and once again enjoy activities like gardening, shopping, writing a letter or working around the house with renewed energy? There is a treatment that Doctors once believed would damage your joints and as an Occupational Therapy Practitioner, I have seen the miraculous results of how functional exercise treatment increases people’s functional independence enabling people to once again enjoy life’s simple pleasures.
Myth Buster # 3: People with Arthritis Shouldn’t Exercise
For many years Doctors thought that arthritis would damage your joints. Fortunately, many Doctors are now aware of the importance of exercise as an important and significant contributing factor to reducing and eliminating arthritis pain. Therapeutic exercise has proven to be so significant that Doctors often refer their patients to a physical or occupational therapist for a special functional exercise program to increase flexibility, boost energy and improve strength.
Myth Buster # 4: Exercise Makes People with Arthritis Experience More Pain.
The goal of arthritis exercise treatment is to
A.) Reduce inflammation
B.) Minimize pain
C.) Improve your ability to function.
Exercise can accomplish all of these goals safely. While increasing blood flow and providing important nutrients to your body, functional fitness keeps your muscles that surround your joints strong and diminishes joint pain. So strong that the patient mentioned earlier was able to walk, and once again participate in functional activities including going to the bathroom independently. Yes, arthritis, if left untreated, even makes going to the bathroom painful. Functional exercise includes practicing full range of motion exercises which makes your body supply much needed lubrication to your stiff joints. Think of a door hinge that’s stiff and won’t move. It just needs a bit of grease and by placing WD 40 to it, the hinge will move. Your body, when placed in therapeutic functional positions produces lubricant. With continued practice of a functional exercise program, your body will reward you with an increased ability to perform meaningful activities of daily living without pain.
Myth Buster # 5. The Best Exercise for Arthritis is Water Aerobics.
Water aerobics is an excellent exercise for arthritis and I often recommend it to my patients with access to a pool and a qualified licensed therapist. However, it should not be the only type of exercise for arthritis if the goal is to eliminate arthritis pain. In order to eliminate and reduce pain you need to be able to perform exercises that take you through the full range of motion and unless you’re a seagull who doesn’t mind sticking your head under water to bend down, you won’t get the full range of motion exercises your body needs with water aerobics. Muscle tissues have a natural tendency to shorten with aging. Muscles must be regularly stretched to minimize the effect of natural muscle shortening. Flexibility exercises combat the negative effects of stiffness, pain, stress and can significantly improve your life by increasing your functional ability, decreasing pain and turn back your body clock by making your joints younger, healthier and fit. When you are flexible, your muscles have a decreased risk of injury because they are more pliable and less likely to tear. A lot of men don’t stretch, but stretching is EQUALLY important for men. No matter how strong your muscles are, if your muscles are tight, bending and reaching will become painful. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to bend over to reach for any item when it’s fallen on the ground without pain and stiffness?
Functional fitness exercises from a trained expert will get you one stretch closer to being pain free. Some of my patients told me they never stretched before because it hurt. If you’re tight, you NEED to stretch and strengthen your muscles to support your joints and diminish arthritis pain.

The South Beach Diet is well known for being followed by many celebrities and is frequently linked to other low-carb diets, most of which have received considerable bad press.
It is important whilst following the South Beach Diet that you follow the basic rules of the program to ensure that you lose weight and maintain good health. Most importantly, if you want to achieve success, you must make sure you consume the right types and amounts of carbohydrates and fats.
Celebrity Diets that work like The South Beach diet have been shown to lower cholesterol levels and some claims have even been made that the diet can also reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
One of the side effects of dieting is often the development of food cravings. However, followers have said that eating this way eliminates food cravings because you don’t feel hungry while on the South Beach Diet.
Losing weight whilst adhering to any weight loss program takes quite a bit of motivation and determination and the South Beach Diet is no different. Make sure you commence the diet with a positive mental attitude and you will get you off to a good start.
As well as losing weight, learning to eat healthily on the South Beach Diet plan and discovering which are the good carbs and fats, will help you to care for your heart too.
The Diet Plan is not a low-fat, low carb diet like so many of the other high profile diet fads and whilst on the South Beach Diet you will discover that not all carbohydrates and fats are bad for you.
Learning how to eat the right sort of carbohydrates and fats is key to making this program work for you. Eating the right proportion of “good” carbohydrates and fats will take some getting used to but will quickly become second nature.
Weight loss is often rapid in the first two weeks of following the South Beach Diet program and you can expect weight loss of up to 13lbs. However, things soon start to slow down and you must remember this is entirely normal and not start to worry that you are doing it wrong.
Realistically, it is possible to achieve long-term weight loss as opposed to just losing weight in the short term when you stick with this special eating plan.
Celebrity Diet Secrets like the South Beach Diet, when correctly followed, is highly effective at ridding your body of excess weight whilst also keeping you healthy and improving your well-being.
Although it is similar to the Atkins diet in that it works in stages, the South Beach Diet program could really be said to be a lifestyle rather than an actual diet. By following the plan, you will eat three meals and two additional each day, taken from the flexible meal planner that comes with the program.
To help you achieve your weight loss goal whilst on the diet program you should first write down how much weight you would like to lose. The written goal should then be placed somewhere highly visible so that it can act as a constant reminder of why you are on the diet.
To avoid temptation, rid your home of any forbidden foods before starting the South Beach Diet to help you stick to the plan.
Drinking lots of water serves two purposes whilst on most diets. Firstly, it will help you to feel fuller and secondly, it will help to flush any toxins in your body that may be released as a result of following the diet plan.
It is important, regardless of whether you are following a diet program, that you make the time to fit exercise into your schedule. Regular exercise, as well as improving your fitness levels, will help to speed up your weight loss.
It’s hard to stay motivated all the time and you may occasionally slip up when on the diet. If this happens, don’t be tempted to give up. The South Beach Diet works so simply pick up where you left off and you’ll soon start to see the weight dropping off once more.
Some celebrities on the South Beach Diet program include people like Bill and Hillary Clinton and Bette Midler.

Insider Secrets to the Business of Teaching Yoga (Part 1)
If you are a Yoga teacher, or thinking about becoming a Yoga teacher, the concepts contained within this series will save you money and, potentially, earn you a lot more money. How much money you want to earn as a Yoga teacher, is up to you. If you are willing to put in your time, marketing your Yoga teaching skills, the sky is the limit. None of us has to teach Yoga; we choose to teach Yoga because we love it and know the many rewards of steady Yoga practice.
That is why I pass on Yoga Business and Marketing information to my Yoga teacher interns, friends, peers, Yoga coaching clients, and competitors. Many great Yoga teachers are guilty of unwise business decisions, and desperately scratch out a living, without the proper business skills.
Speaking of Yoga business competitors, you would be better off to network with other local Yoga teachers. Some of the neighboring Yoga studios, in Providence, RI, refer prospective Yoga students to me, and I do the same for them. You can’t fill every Yoga niche and do you want to really try? Even McDonald’s has a limit on the menu and we can all learn from this. Better to do one or a few things very well, than do nothing well at all.
“Yoga Business” – Is this an Oxymoron, a Conflict of Interest, or Blasphemy? Do you feel guilty taking a Yoga students’ money? Why should you? What do your Yoga students expect you to live on? Would you feel bad paying for scuba lessons, skiing instruction, golf instruction, or a day with a fishing guide?
Of course not – because these instructors put in the time, practicing a skill, and are worth the money you pay them. If you have Yoga students who do not appreciate your skills in the same way – refuse to teach Yoga to them. You put in 200 or 500 hours of Yoga teacher training, worked on refining each aspect of teaching Yoga, and invested years of training as a Yoga student before that.
Yoga instructors deserve to be paid well. Continuing education courses for Yoga teachers, Yoga retreats, workshops, Yoga teacher seminars, books, Yoga correspondence courses for instructors, and Yoga videos are rarely free. If you join a local Yoga teacher association, or decide to become a registered Yoga teacher, that’s not free either.
So, where does all this guilt about taking money for your Yoga teaching services come from? It comes from being a “giver.” Yoga teachers are some of the biggest givers I have ever met. Which is nice, and restores my faith in humanity, but Yoga teachers are also supposed to be a living example of quality life. You cannot support your family, pay your rent, eat properly, or receive medical care by teaching Yoga for free.

Yoga Secrets To Improving The Mind And Body
Before you begin to learn yoga you must first decide what you are hoping to learn from yoga. The simple fact is yoga can provide many benefits on the body and mind.
If fitness is the sole aim of why you wish to practice yoga then you will leave your mind closed of to the benefits that it can have on you mentally. If you decide to perform yoga for the sole reason of gaining spiritual enlightenment and the positive effects it can have on you mentally then the fitness aspect may not be exploited to its full potential.
What I would recommend and believe everyone who is interested in taking up this practice is to enter it with an open mind. Learn the basics to yoga first and then as you become more adapt to the postures, poses and mental side that it teaches then and only then will you begin to expand and reap the full benefits of yoga.
Many practitioners of yoga often talk about it uniting the mind, body and spirit through the practice of yoga exercises. I am not saying this is a false statement as I do belive that it can reap those benefits, but many people who enter into yoga for the first time have a perception that they will gain this enlightenment and benefits instantly.
Where as the truth is that it takes many years of practice and dedication to reach these levels. When you start performing yoga for the first time you will begin to notice a difference, but it is essential that you take it a small step at a time. There is a reason that yoga is the oldest existing (what I like to call) mind and body system around, this is due to the fact that it helps to aid in providing a great level fitness, has known health benefits and can help in improving a persons mental state.
One of the main reasons why yoga has such a huge benefit on the body is because it stretches the muscles therefore when you perform a yoga workout it would have a similar effect of a massage which will ensure that the ideal blood supply can be reached by every organ.
The beauty of yoga is that there are many different forms which gives everyone the chance to find what one suits them best. Don’t just set your mind on one type of yoga, try out a few different routines, see which one suits you best.
Different forms of yoga can effect different people in many different ways. So make sure to find out which type will provide the maximum benefit on your mind and body. Yoga can be a very strenuous exercise so make sure that you do not push yourself to much when you start of. This can result in an injury. So take your time to build yourself up and when you feel extremely comfortable then begin to push yourself more.
Below are a list of the most common yoga practices
Ashtanga (Also known as power yoga) – Perfect for the person who wants a very hard workout session. It concentrate less on meditation and more on tough physical exercise.
Iyengar – This is a classical form of yoga and is seen as the best starting block for beginners. Many props are used in this yoga style.

Sivananda – This type of yoga consists of a series of 12 poses
Viniyoga – This form helps to develop strength balance and healing. This is probably the most ideal form of yoga for elders, beginners and people with muscle injuries
Raja-yoga – This is aimed at people who are capable of intense concentration
Bhakti-yoga – Helps a person to gain focus on self surrender when in the face of the divine
Mantra-yoga – This is a meditation like yoga which focuses on the verbal repetition or can be mental to empowering sounds such as (om and ram)
